UPDATE: The American Embassy in Egypt recommended Sunday morning that Americans leave the country as soon as possible.
The announcement came after days of escalation in violence and lawlessness during ongoing protests against President Mubarak.
In its travel warning, the embassy said that it will be in contact with American citizens about departure assistance as soon as possible.
Many airports in Egypt are overcrowded with people trying to escape the world’s most populous Arab nation which now faces an uncertain future.
Other nations, including China, France, and Russia have also warned citizens against non-essential travel to Egypt.
