Ever wanted to go on a diving holiday, but not where to start out? These five places are not only some of the best spots in the world for diving, but they’re also in places that you’d want to spend a vacation.
Great Barrier Reef, Australia
It may be an obvious one, but the longest coral reef in the world has oodles of fish, coral and other animals from turtles to crocodiles – there are thirty species of whales and dolphins alone. Plus, you’ll get to tick off one of the world’s natural wonders at the same time.
Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
A 25 mile long island (one of its beaches stretches 12 miles alone), “Provo” has spectacularly clear waters, coral reefs and plenty of shipwrecks to start exploring, as well as wildlife including reef sharks to get your viewing teeth into.
Red Sea, Egypt
The Red Sea is renowned for the quality of its diving, but it’s the crystal clear Gulf of Aqaba – between Egypt’s Sinai peninsula and the Middle East – where conditions are best. Sharm El Sheikh, at the southern tip, is the main resort, but boho little fishing town Dahab, an hour north, is equally good for diving.
With its waters staying warm all year round, Hawaii’s a great place to hop over for a quick spot of diving. Just north of the main islands is Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument – one of the largest marine reserves in the world.
Maria La Gorda, Cuba
On the western tip of Cuba, Maria La Gorda is tricky to get to (you’ll need to take a bus from Havana) but the diving is well worth it. The waters are full of shipwrecks (it was a hotspot for pirates back in the day), incredible wildlife and a black coral reserve.
