That traditional dance between man and beast has come to an end
On Wednesday, authorities in Catalonia banned bullfighting,
forcing it to become Spain’s first major region to ban the lethal, centuries-old
dance between bull fighter and creature after a passionate debate that put
animal rights against a pillar of long-established culture.
People cheered when a speaker at the local legislator announced
the outlaw had passed 68-55 with nine abstaining. The new law will take effect in 2010 in the
northeastern coastal region whose capital is Barcelona.
The area is in which bull fighting is being outlawed is
wealthy and independent. Many of those living in Spain have seen the pressure
for a ban on bullfighting as a further proposal by the region to stand out from
the rest of the country.
