A high speed rail system will not be coming to Florida after all

A state Supreme Court ruling has officially ended the discussion over a proposed high speed rail line that would have connected Tampa, Orlando, and other major cities throughout Florida.

The high court sided with Governor Rick Scott, upholding his decision to reject federal funding for the project.

Scott opposed construction of the line saying he did not want taxpayers on the hook for overruns on construction and operational costs.

Supporters of the rail system filed a lawsuit, claiming Scott was bound by the law to accept the stimulus money.

The court disagreed, however, and now the funds will be offered to other states. New York and Rhode Island have already expressed interest in Florida’s stimulus money, according to US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
