Five Tips to Affordable Montreal, Flickr: yawper

Try the Smoked Meat at Schwartz’s

Montreal is close, a small taste of Europe in North America. For a short weekend getaway or a longer vacation, it’s an ideal destination. Unlike Europe, however, you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank. And, you can make your trip even more affordable, allowing you to do more while you’re there. Check out these ways you can save money while you’re in Montreal – and make your dollar go that much further:

Use the subway: It’s a no-brainer, especially if you want to travel among the old town, downtown and the plateau neighborhood. The subway is fast, easy and cheap. You’ll save both time and money, giving you more ways to enjoy Montreal. Or, if the weather is nice, rent a bike.

Enjoy the festivals: Montreal is home to countless festivals throughout the year. Many are free, and most of those that aren’t are definitely affordable. One of my favorites, the Fantasia Film Festival is coming up in July, and it’s a blast, particularly for horror film fanatics.

Cheap grub: You don’t have to spend a fortune on food in Montreal. Smoked meat at Schwartz’s really needs to be on your list, and it won’t come close to breaking your bank. And when you’re wandering Saint-Denis in search of your next party, stop at the Saint-Denis Pool Hall for a hot dog (sound like a local by asking for it “all dressed” instead of “with everything”).

Street art: The city’s walls are something of a museum. Montreal has a vibrant street art scene, and the work is stunning. Walk the streets for a while, and soak it in. The plateau neighborhood is the best place for Montreal street art, without a doubt.

Old Montreal: You need to walk through this enchanting part of the city. But, you don’t need to spend a fortune there. Enjoy the shops and art galleries, and sit down for a glass of wine or two. Become a part of the local culture.
