San Francisco Cable Car Museum

San Francisco’s Indian Summer will be coming to a close before too long, which means that rain and fog isn’t too far away. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still book flights to San Francisco and visit, which even during the winter months provides a nice break from the winter temperatures that most of the U.S. is facing. If you find yourself stuck in an afternoon rain shower in San Francisco, the following are a few of the best free things to do to keep you dry.

San Francisco Cable Car Museum: While riding a cable car is no doubt an iconic San Francisco activity, you probably won’t be going for a ride on a dreary day. Instead learn about the history of cable cars and see the process in action behind the scenes at the San Francisco Cable Car Museum. Part of the museum includes the cable car power house, which drives the cable cars.

Tour Anchor Brewing Company: There are few things that are more enjoyable on a rainy day than a beer or wine tour. Anchor Brewing has a long history in the Bay Area, with its signature product, Anchor Steam, being found in almost every bar in San Francisco. Did we mention a tour of the brewery is free? However, you’ll have to call weeks ahead of time as tours fill up quickly. Afterward, take the short walk into the Mission to enjoy a couple pints of Anchor Steam from one of the many great local bars.

Take an indoor walking tour: There are many free walking tours in San Francisco, some of which take place inside. Locals who know all the ins and outs of San Francisco volunteer their time during the week to introduce travelers to the city. Available tours that take place throughout the week include the Diego Rivera Mural at the Stock Exchange Tower, Ferry Building, and the San Francisco Main Library.

Go bookstore hopping: We’re talking independent bookstores. These are bookstores you’ll find in downtown San Francisco or in the mall, but are scattered throughout the city, such as North Beach, the Mission, and Inner Richmond. What you’ll find is a collection of books and magazines, both used and new, that give any other bookstore a run for its money. My personal favorite is Green Apple Books in the Inner Richmond.

San Francisco Maritime Museum: The San Francisco Maritime Museum is just one part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. Located just off from Fisherman’s Wharf, it features great views looking out over the bay. The museum features numerous permanent and temporary exhibits, including photomurals, drawings, models, and artifacts. This is a good spot during a brief rain shower, when afterward you can tour historic ships. While the museum is free, tours of the ships are at a nominal fee.
