Christmas lights on display at neighborhood home.

Take a tour of Christmas lights around your neighborhood

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just a couple days away. While many people spend their day opening presents, eating a Christmas ham, and enjoying their new gifts, many others do not. A few don’t celebrate it or celebrate it prior to Christmas Day itself. Below, we’ve put together some alternative activities to spend Christmas Day.

Go see a movie: The holidays are one of the best times of the year to see a movie, as many of the blockbuster movies of the year come out during this time. Even if you celebrate Christmas early in the day, you can head to your local theater for a matinee or evening show. May we suggest that movie passes also make great stocking stuffers.

Go snow tubing or snow sledding: If you’re one of the people who lives in a colder climate, you might be one of the few that can enjoy a white Christmas. If so, wax those sled blades and find your makeshift snow sled to hit the snowy hills. Some ski slopes may even have their snow tubing lanes open for visitors to go tubing.

Volunteer: While many people may volunteer on days leading up to Christmas, many shelters, food kitchens, and other organizations need the most help on Christmas day itself. Christmas Day is a great time to give back and to feel a sense of satisfaction from helping others.

Take a holiday lights tour: A great nightcap to Christmas Day is taking a trip to visit your town’s light displays. This may be your town’s historic Main Street district or maybe a neighborhood that’s especially well decorated this time of year. Most cities and neighborhoods keep their decorations up until New Year’s.

Take a day trip: It’s unlikely you’re going to find many people on the roads on Christmas Day, making it the perfect day for a road trip. A quick jaunt to the mountains or beach may be in store to get you out of the house, when most people instead, are staying in. Make sure to grab food and drinks prior to hitting the road, as few restaurants will be open.
