The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world. It takes place every August over three weeks in, yep you guessed it, Edinburgh.
For this arts mega festival, thousands of performing artists along with even more fans of live performance take over the Scottish capital to put on and experience a multitude of shows organized for virtually every kind of audience imaginable. This year’s Fringe will span 25 days and offer a total of more than 2,500 shows, with performers from almost 50 different countries. Of this year’s 2,695 shows, roughly half will be having their world premiere at Fringe.
From the kid-friendly to the ultra risqué, Fringe presents a range of performances: classic Greek plays, Shakespeare, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions … definitely some sort of quality entertainment for any and every taste. Lots and lots of performances are free, and with buskers taking to the streets, there’s hardly a dull moment. And if into live comedy or you’re partial to improv, then there’s no better place in the world to be. From Britain’s biggest comedic stars to the next generation of comedians and up and coming actors, if Fringe is anything, it’s a showcase of the biggest, brightest and funniest performers from around the world.
The annual event is a citywide affair, but most of the 270 plus participating venues are but a stone’s throw from each another. In fact, many are in Edinburgh’s scenic and ancient Old Town, where you really won’t need to walk more than five or 10 minutes between them or to go check out all the sights along or near Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile.
Sounds like a dream, right? It is. But just showing up without a game plan might prove to be a real nightmare. This truly is a festival on an epic scale and plenty of folks actually schedule their whole year around August in Edinburgh. Some how the city seems to keep its cool and welcoming demeanor. Still it’s not a bad idea at all to have a look the official website for the Edinburgh Festive Fringe. The Box Office Information page and of course the complete 2012 program are worth a bit of your time. Free Fringeapps for iPhone and Android would be handy resources too!
