Songkran - The Water Festival
Songkran, sometimes known as the Water Festival, is one of the most popular
festivals among Thais. This festival is celebrated in the country as the
traditional New Year’s Day, on April 13th. Songkran celebrations last about
2 days and water features mainly as a tool for purification. People pour
scented water over their elder's hands and clean Buddhist statues in hope
of washing away their bad thoughts and misfortune. The festival also
includes giant water fight in the major cities of Thailand where people
happily soak themselves and the others in water.
The Queen's Birthday
Falling on August 12th, Queen's Birthday is a national holiday in Thailand
and on this occasion, Thais honor both their own mother and their country's
mother. Mothers are invited at their children's school where students
perform Thai dance in their honor.
Father’s Day is celebrated on the King’s birthday i.e. December 5th. Homes all over the country are decorated with portraits of
the King and Thai flags are hoisted on the roofs. Natives wear yellow or
gold to mark this occasion. In Bangkok, streets remain closed to traffic
and elaborate firework displays are organized in the honor of the King.
