Fourth of July is right around the corner, and you know what that means. It’s time to grab some tongs and some beer to grill, chill and enjoy fireworks for all the thrills. But what if you’re not in the U.S. to celebrate this Independence Day? Simple: you find a spot where travelers and expats like you, can strut around in their red, white and blue, too. If you’re not around for the yearly backyard barbecue this year, don’t worry. You won’t miss a thing if you’re in Shanghai for the 4th of July, because this city is full of special events dedicated to the holiday! From Texan-themed festivities such as line dancing and barbecue blowouts to city-wide pub crawls, join the city’s many tourists and American expats to enjoy some truly star-spangled soirées!
Happen to be in Denmark this Independence Day? Well, then you’re in for a treat. In 1912, the four-day festival started out as an ode to the friendship and bond formed between the U.S. and Denmark when America welcomed in over 300,000 Danish immigrants with open arms. The city of Rebild has been celebrating annually ever since, and today, it’s known as the largest celebration of America’s independence across the globe! Festivities include live music, fireworks and speeches by prominent Americans and Danes alike, from Walt Disney to members of the Danish royal family.
If you step out onto the famous Darling Harbour in Sydney on 4th of July, you’ll find the night sky illuminated by the marvelous fireworks display, courtesy of the Sydney Expat Americans. This group of Australian-Americans throw quite a bash, complete with American DJs, some classic summer outdoor activities like cornhole and beer pong, and some free American whiskey tastings. The dress code? Don’t you dare forget to don your best red, white and blue because if you don’t, your ticket could double in price!
Paris is home to thousands of American expats. As a result, that makes for one heck of a celebration on the 4th of July every year! Don’t be fooled by the romantic demure here, because, boy do Parisians know how to throw a party! Besides the annual Independence Day Summer Party, a visit to Harry’s New York Bar, a watering hole where two of America’s favorite beverages were invented: the sidecar and the Bloody Mary, you’ll find an elaborate display of 4th of July paraphernalia accompanied by many American visitors, students, and expats sporting their favorite finest stars and stripes garb.
