Maybe the only thing hotter than cheap flights to Miami and the Florida sun is Miami’s action-packed sports scene. From football, basketball and baseball to racing, golfing and tennis, Miami has a diverse assortment of sports. So lace up your cleats (or get online and buy your tickets) because there’s not a better city to get your game face on.
Professional and College Football
From late summer to early winter, football dominates the sporting landscape with high school, college and professional games. The half-billion dollar renovated Hard Rock Stadium serves as the epicenter of the football frenzy. Thousands of Hurricane fans, students and alumni of the University of Miami gather for rowdy tailgating parties and action-packed games on Saturdays. The party picks up the next day as ‘Fins fans strut down Dan Marino Boulevard in their orange-and-teal gear to cheer on the NFL Miami Dolphins.
Upscale NBA Basketball Games
If you’ve always thought of American Airlines for its many flights to Miami, think again. The American Airlines Arena here hosts some of the flashiest fans in the NBA. Home to the three-time champion Miami Heat basketball team, the 20,000-seat arena is filled to capacity with banner-waving fans and A-list celebrities. Among sports staple fares like corn dogs and beer, the glossy arena features a champagne concession bar, a posh underground nightclub and two black-bricked restaurants that feature rotating celebrity chefs and floor-to-ceiling window views of the court.
The Boys of Summer: Miami Marlins
Need to beat the heat? Miami Marlins fans are happy to sit beneath the sweltering rays of the summer sun in the first-class MLB ballpark built in 2012, since they can watch the action from a seat, a barstool or while cooling off in the Clevelander pool. For the ultimate fan experience, arrive early to participate in the festivities held in the grand plaza or schedule a private tour year-round.
Rip Roaring Racing
Each weekend, the Homestead-Miami Speedway roars to life as motor sports fans pack the 65,000-seat stands for a thrilling night of racing. In addition to driving experiences and auto clubs, the track hosts the Trans-Am Series in early October and NASCAR’s season-ending Ford Championship race in November. If you’re feeling lucky, drop by the Calder Casino & Race Course in Miami Gardens to place a bet. You’ll also find horse competitions at the Tropical Park Equestrian Center and a greyhound track at Magic City Casino.
Miami’s near-perfect weather allows you to hit world-class golf courses nearly every day of the year. The city offers a choice of more than two dozen public and private golf courses, including the famed fairways of the Jacaranda Golf Club and Miccosukee Golf and Country Club. Each year, the Trump National Doral’s challenging Blue Monster hosts the WGC – Cadillac Championship.
Depending on the time of year you’re visiting Miami, you can also catch a Florida Panthers hockey game, a Miami FC soccer match or the Sony Ericsson Open. So get to Miami and feel the heat!
If you got one of the cheap flights to Miami and have a little extra money in your pocket, why not chill out at the spa after all the sports?
