First, it was built to mark the advent of first group of Jesuit priests to the city in July 1586 and second that its interior is an exquisite work of gold leaf, wood carvings and gilded plaster.

Iglesia y Monasterio de San Francisco (or Church and Monastery of St. Francis)

The Church and Monastery of St. Francis is a 16th-century Roman Catholic complex in Quito and the largest architectural group of structures of colonial Latin America. It was remodeled many times from its founding in 1534 to its completion in 1680 AD because of earthquakes and prevailing architectural trends.
