Tokyo National Museum
The Tokyo National Museum is one of the oldest and largest museums of Japan. Established in the year 1972, it was moved to its current location in Ueno Park after years. Featured here is one of the largest and best collections of art and archeological artifacts in Japan. It comprises more than 110,000 individual items including nearly a hundred national treasures. Antique Buddhist statues, painted sliding doors, scrolls, ceramics, masks, costume, armor, and weapons are few amongst these. Nearly 4000 different items are part of its permanent collection. Apart from this, temporary exhibitions are held from time to time.
Nezu Museum
The Nezu Museum was set up to preserve and exhibit the collection of pre-modern Japanese and East Asian art of Nezu Kaichiro (1860-1940). The collection here comprises of around 7,400 art work. The museum collection comprises calligraphy, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, archaeological materials, objects in lacquer, metal, & wood, and more. Also available here are Chinese bronzes of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The museum is also famous for its vast Japanese-style garden.
Hara Museum of Contemporary Art
Located in the Kita-Shinagawa district of Tokyo, the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is amongst the oldest contemporary art museums in Japan. It was intially designed as a private mansion by Jin Watanabe around 1938. The museum building has been designed in a Bauhaus style and is a rare example of architecture belonging to early Showa period. It was converted into a museum during 1979. At present the collection here comprises the works by Alexander Calder, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, Karel Appel, Buckminster Fuller, Aiko Miyawaki, Yasumasa Morimura, and more.
