Places of Interest in Kodiak Kodiak is a city located on Kodiak Island, the largest island of Alaska and second largest island of United States. The city is famous as the Emerald Isle. Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge The refuge stretches for nearly 2,812 square mile and covers almost two-third of the Kodiak Island. The refuge has almost everything - rugged mountains, alpine meadows, wetlands, grassland, forest. Here visitors can enjoy bear viewing and fishing. The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is home to nearly 3,5 bears. Male bears in refuge generally weigh more than 8 pounds and are approximately 1 feet tall. It is also a famous fishing destination with all five species of salmon along with cod, trout, rockfish, and halibut.
Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park Visitors who are enthusiastic about learning island's history are recommended to visit the Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park. The park reveals the island's history during World War II. It features numerous historic ruins from World War II along with a lake containing trout, wildflower-laden meadows, and deep spruce forests.
Kodiak Crab Festival The best event on the island is the Kodiak Crab Festival. Initially held in the year 1958, the festival was a celebration of the end of crabbing season. It is a week-long festival, held in the month of May. Parades, foot and kayak races, various fishing-skills contests, and lots of cooked king crab are prominent features of this festival.
