Alexandria is a city in and the parish seat of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. This beautiful riverside city along Red River is located near the geographic center of the state and is the go-to place in the US to see how the cusp of history, culture and festivities looks like. It is full of Civil War historic sites like the Kent Plantation House. It was completed in 18 and is the oldest standing structure in Central Louisiana. Places of Interest in Alexandria
The Kent Plantation House in Alexandria (completed: 18) is a classical masterpiece of French Colonial architecture that has successfully blended some authentic signatures of Greek Revival and Creole architecture. It is a representation of plantation life in Southern Louisiana during 1795 and 1855. Built on a land granted by the then Spanish king, it is the oldest standing structure in Central Louisiana and one of only two buildings in the city that have survived the burning of 1864 by Union troops that were fleeing after their defeat.
The Louisiana History Museum
The Louisiana History Museum in Alexandria is home to an extensive display related to regional geography, politics and farming practices, and the impact of the Civil War on Central Louisiana and Alexandria. It has more than fifty displays and exhibits that focus on multiple subjects like Native Americans, the town plan of 185, the American Revolution and the Civil War.
The Alexandria Zoological Park
Opened in 1926, the Alexandria Zoological Park is a 33-acre zoo in Alexandria. It is home to about 5 animals, some of them endangered or threatened. It also has numerous themed habitats like African Experience (a large naturalistic habitat for African lions amidst large rock formations and a waterfall) and the award-winning Louisiana Habitat (with several plants, animals and architecture of Louisiana). Some noted native and endangered animals here include Roseate spoonbill, North American river otter, Chinese alligator, cotton-top tamarin, fishing cat, Indochinese tiger, jaguar and spider monkey.
