Things to Do in Newark
Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart
A magnificent French Gothic cathedral resembling the great cathedral at
Rheims, France, its construction was first proposed in 1896. Its towers
soar 323 feet, and the cathedral covers some 45,000 square feet, comparable
to Westminster Abbey. It features a heavy use of stained glass, including
three rose windows; vaulted ceilings; a variety of wood paneling; imported
and domestic marble; and crystal, silver, and bronze chandeliers. This
cathedral is the 5th largest in North America and has been visiting by Pope
John Paul II and featured on the HBO television series, Sopranos. The
Cathedral Basilica holds concerts open to the public throughout the year
and it has the largest pipe organ ever built by the Schantz Organ Co. which
includes 154 ranks playable from two consoles.
First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church
A Byzantine granite structure inspired by the Baths of Pisa in Italy and
built through gifts made by Thomas Baldwin Peddie, philanthropist and mayor
of Newark in the 1860s, the church was erected in 1890. It features an
unusual use of interior spaces, rich paneling, 200 doors, 173 windows -
most of which are stained glass - and dome 80 feet above the main
auditorium.
First Presbyterian Church
First Presbyterian Church in Newark (PCUSA), also known as “Old First
Church”, was founded in 1666. The Church stands as a symbol of spiritual
values during the downtown community of the City of Newark. Old First
Church has a rich treasure of authentic records, which declares that it is
“the Church that founded Newark.” The church was once the seat of
government for Newark, producing pastors that served as the first
presidents of Princeton, Harvard and Yale universities. In addition, it was
one of the churches that helped found Princeton University. It was also
historically used as a regular stop on the “Underground Railroad” for
Harriet Tubman and others which passageways through the church’s cellar are
still accessible.
