Waikiki Beach
Waikiki is a district of the city of Honolulu. Once the leisure place of Hawaiian royalty in the 19th century, it is now known for its crescent shaped beach. Some other highlights near the beach include an ancient volcanic crater called the Diamond Head Crater and third oldest aquarium in the U.S. - the Waikiki Aquarium. The latter is home to hundreds of marine species from Hawaii and beyond.
Pearl Harbor
The historical lagoon harbor of Pearl Harbor is located less than 10 miles away from Honolulu. It is the most significant reminder of US’s direct entry into the Second World War. The ill-famed Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941 was carried out by the Imperial Japanese Navy airplanes and submarines on the US air base and leading to the loss of most of the American sailors and marines on board.
USS Arizona Memorial
Furthering his trip to the Pearl Harbor, a visitor is advised to go to the USS Arizona Memorial that marks the watery grave of 1102 sailors and marines (out of total 1177) killed on USS Arizona during the ghastly attack that day. One can only visit the sunken hull of the battleship by a boat, and admire the backdrop of the even mightier battleship USS Missouri where Japan surrendered to United States in the Second World War.
