Explore Honolulu

Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is the most remote city of its size in the world and is the main gateway to Hawaii and the United States. It is home to several key US military defense zones since the Second World War, and is also identified as a famed center of nightlife and shopping. Honolulu is also identified with its crescent-shaped beach and posh hotels and some famous sites related to the audacious Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Some popular attractions here are Diamond Head, USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri and Waikiki Aquarium.

Things to do in Honolulu

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki is a district of the city of Honolulu. Once the leisure place of Hawaiian royalty in the 19th century, it is now known for its crescent shaped beach. It is one of the best known beaches in the world. Some other highlights near the beach include an ancient volcanic crater called the Diamond Head Crater and third oldest aquarium in the U.S. - the Waikiki Aquarium. The latter is home to hundreds of marine species from Hawaii and beyond.

Pearl Harbor

The historical lagoon harbor of Pearl Harbor is located less than 10 miles away from Honolulu. It is the most significant reminder of US’s direct entry into the Second World War. The ill-famed Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941 was carried out by the Imperial Japanese Navy airplanes and submarines on the US air base and leading to the loss of most of the American sailors and marines on board.

USS Arizona Memorial

Furthering his trip to the Pearl Harbor, a visitor is advised to go to the USS Arizona Memorial that marks the watery grave of 1102 sailors and marines (out of total 1177) killed on USS Arizona during the ghastly attack that day. One can only visit the sunken hull of the battleship by a boat, and admire the backdrop of the even mightier battleship USS Missouri where Japan surrendered to United States in the Second World War.

Best Time to fly to Honolulu

The best times to fly to Honolulu are the winter and early summer season from December to April. The mercury hovers between mid-60s and low 80s, with least amount of humidity. One can go to the beaches and attend some important sports events like the Aloha Bowl (in December) and NFL Pro Bowl (in January).

  Hawaii
First time to the islands. Amazing experience. Pictures do not do justice to how beautiful it is. Anyone on the fence about going to Hawaii should just jump on over. We will be returning.
