Victoria Memorial Hall
The Victoria Memorial Hall was built in between 1906-21, in the memory of
Queen Victoria. At present it serves as a museum and is a famous tourist
attraction in Kolkata. The collection here includes memorabilia of the
Queen, paintings related to the British Raj (British Rule), weapons,
sculptors, coins, stamps, textiles, and more. Within the museum is a Royal
Gallery where portraits of Queen and Prince Albert are displayed. After
independence, the National leader’s gallery was added to the museum. It
showcases portraits & relics of the Indian freedom fighters.
Fort William is amongst the first structures in East India. Situated on the
banks of the River Hooghly, the fort has been named after King William III
of England. The arsenal and the military area of the fort is a must visit.
At present, various fairs & exhibitions are held on the grounds
surrounding the fort.
The Indian Museum was established in the year 1814. It is the earliest
& the largest multipurpose Museum not only in the country but also in
the Asia-Pacific region of the world. Divided into 6 sections-Art,
Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology, and Economic Botany; the
Museum has 35 galleries. These are dedicated to the culture &
scientific artifacts. Several rare and unique specimens related to
humanities and natural sciences have been preserved and displayed here.
