its name from the ‘Father of Raleigh’ and ‘Father of Wake County’, Joel
Duke Homestead State Historic Site
Duke Homestead State Historic Site is in Durham and was built around 1852
by Washington Duke, who played a significant role in the American Civil War
in the 1850s. It is a National Historic Landmark and the site of the
establishment of the American Tobacco Company, the largest tobacco firm in
North America. The site is a museum where visitors can view restored rooms,
artefacts, and tobacco barns.
