One of the most picturesque groups of islands in Micronesia, Chuuk is made up of 11 high islands on and around the lagoon's fringing coral reef and 24 atolls and low islands that lie outside the lagoon. It was once the bulwark of Imperial Japanese Navy but was bombed and devastated by Allied Forces during the Second World War. Consequently, it is now a deathbed of an entire fleet of Japanese naval warships that now reside at its bottom. Spending a few hours wreck diving or snorkeling here would offer you a vivid snapshot of the fateful day that bombardment had taken place. Next up, you can use the unmarked hikes here or climb up to the Octopus Mountain to get a panoramic view of Weno and Pou Bays. A more tangible part of Japanese naval might can also be derived from a mid-20th century lighthouse in Sapuk and it this abandoned artifact sits royally over a hill in the nearby jungle.
