Places of Interest in Santorini Classically known as Thera, Santorini is a peaceful and lovely island located in the southern Aegean Sea at a distance of about 2 kilometers southeast from the mainland of Greece. It is the largest island of small and circular archipelago and is the residue of volcanic caldera. Santorini is more imposing when approached from sea as the vista boasts the island entirely enclosed by steep cliffs ranging in elevation between 2 to 4 meters. Fira The capital of Santorini, Fira features whitewashed cubic houses and terraces, little squares, blue-domed churches, and winding lanes. The backdrop boasting the blue water along with the quietude spread in the nooks and corners increases the lure of the visit. The area lives majorly on tourism and a number of buildings of this region have been given over to restaurants, small hotels, souvenir shops, apartments, jewelers, and cafes.
Perivolos and Perissa The most popular beaches of the island are located on its southeast coast between the villages of Perivolos and Perissa. It is a long stretch of beautiful black volcanic sand. One can, by taking on rent, enjoy sun-beds and umbrellas on these beaches. Moreover, a plethora of water sports are also offered here. The setting of the beautiful beach in Perissa is at a distance of approximately 12 kilometers from Fira.
Archeological Museum Located in the close vicinity to the upper station of the cable car in Fira, Archeological Museum is a small archeological museum putting on display the findings from Ancient Thira. These ancient items range from the Byzantine, Roman, Dorian, and Hellenistic periods.
