Places of Interest in Saipan
The largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan is considered as one of the most naturally beautiful places in the United States. Northern Mariana Islands is a commonwealth of the United States in the western Pacific Ocean. Saipan was also an important battle site during the Second World War and a number of Japanese bunkers and armaments still exist here. National Park Service manages these historic sites under the 'War in the Pacific' Parks designation. The island is fairly small and can easily be covered completely by renting a car or a moped. Tourists can enjoy its mesmerizing natural beauty as well as explore a lot of parks. This island is also popular for offering excellent scuba diving opportunities.
Lake Susupe
The only lake in Saipan, Lake Susupe is located in the village of Susupe. This lake this home to a few avifauna species found only in the Marianas. At the shores of this lake, there are large ironwood trees and there are also 17 lovely little ponds around the Lake Susupe. These ponds and lake are home to very large fancy-tail guppies. Various birds from Asia migrate to Lake Susupe during the winter.
Suicide Cliff
Located on the northern tip of the island, Suicide Cliff is the site where scores of Japanese civilians jumped to their deaths in 1944 during the Battle of Saipan. These civilians were trying to escape the fighting and were convinced by the Japanese Army that that they would be killed by the Americans. Suicide Cliff is located on the rock outcropping and overlooking the sea. There are lots of Japanese memorials found here at the site.
Bird Island
One of the most beautiful spots in Saipan, Bird Island is home to thousands of birds. Visitors can still find holes in the soft cliffs of the island from the mortar shells of the Second World War. One can also witness sea turtles in the waters of Bird Island. Through walking around the island, visitors can view deep pools in the rocks. These pools are home to a plethora of large colorful ocean fishes.
