Osaka (meaning: large hill) is the capital city of Osaka Prefecture and third largest city in Japan. Earlier known as Naniwa, it has thrice been the national capital in 7th and 8th centuries, and was nicknamed the Nations kitchen because it was a prominent center of rice trade during 17th and 19th century. This exquisitely delightful Japanese city offers a range of delectable cuisines and eclectic architecture as its bi-pronged offerings to its visitors, and a mention of the former revolves around the citys famous rice wine called Sake which is made from the fresh streams running through the prefecture's mountains.

Places of Interest in Osaka
Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the largest public aquariums in the world. This stunning walk-through aquarium has an extensive display of 3 marine creatures across 62 species and multiple habitats. There are more than 15 large tanks that all recreate a specific part of the region in and around the Pacific Ocean, some of the special ones relate to Japanese forests, Antarctica and the Pacific Ocean itself. Major marine creatures depicted here include otters, sea lions, penguins, dolphins, manta rays, whale sharks, rays and jellyfish.
Osaka Castle
Emblematic of the citys historical and architectural identity is the 16th century superstructure called the Osaka Castle. It is built over two raised platforms that are stonewalled by a moat to yield an array of 13 structures on the inside. Its southern periphery is hallmarked by some partially recreated foundations of the 7th century Naniwa Palace. This magnificent caste is at its glorious best during the Cherry Blossom season (from March to May) as its backdrop is colorfully emblazoned with cherry blossom flowers.
Shitenno-ji
Shitenno-ji is one of Japans oldest Buddhist temples, and certainly the first ever built by the state. First built in 593 AD in typical continental style, it was rebuilt and expanded subsequently over the centuries. It was built by Prince Shotoku in 6th century to honor the Shitenno, the four heavenly kings or four Buddhist gods that together watch four cardinal directions in the world. Highlights here include a five-story pagoda, a golden pavilion (called Kondo) with an image of the Bodhisattva Kanno and a covered corridor that links three temple gates.
