Places of Interest in Jerusalem
The capital city of Israel, Jerusalem is located on a plateau in the Judean Mountains between the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and is considered as a holy city in the three major Abrahamic religions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. It is the land where Jesus was crucified and rose again, where the Jews raised the First Temple to protect the Ark of the Covenant, and where the Prophet Mohammad scaled to heaven in order to receive God's word. With a potpourri of religious sites, it is a justified saying that it takes a lifetime to explore everything that Jerusalem has to offer.
Haram Al-Sharif
One of the holiest sanctuaries around the world, Haram Al-Sharif offers visitors opportunity to follow the footstep of centuries of pilgrims. The site is equally lauded by Christians, Jews, and Muslims. According to legends, this is the site when Abraham is said to have offered his son as a sacrifice to God. It is also believed that it is the site where the Prophet Muhammad proceeded to heaven during his early days of preaching and where the Solomon built the First Temple for the Ark of the Covenant. The wide plaza is centered on the most iconic landmark of Jerusalem- the shimmering Dome of the Rock.
Wailing Wall and Jewish Quarter
The surviving retaining wall of city's First Temple, Wailing Wall is now the holiest site in Judaism. Since the Ottoman era, this place has been a place of pilgrimage of Jews. The Jewish Quarter, running from the Zion Gate to the Western Wall Plaza, is also a major religious site with a plethora of highlights. A major highlight for history buffs is the Jerusalem Archaeological Park where archaeologists have discovered the interesting remnants of old Jerusalem. Other prominent attractions at Jewish Quarter are Jewish Quarter Street and the Western Wall Tunnels.
Church of the Holy Sepulchre
The holiest site in Jerusalem for Christians, Church of the Holy Sepulchre is said to have been built on site where Jesus was crucified. Empress Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, picked this site for the church during here visit to the Holy Land. This site was announced as the Calvary (or Golgotha) of the gospels to the Byzantine world. The interior of the church features copious holy relics and different quarters inside are owned by different Christian denominations.
