Nicknamed the city that guards the sun of the Caribbean and home to the largest marina in the Caribbean (Puerto del Rey), Fajardo is a beautiful coastal city along the Atlantic Ocean in Puerto Rico. It is a launching pad to the nearby Puerto Rican islands of Culebra and Vieques and the American and British Virgin Islands. You can also enjoy recreational boating here. Also close to Fajardo is situated the Bio-Luminescent Bay where luminescent plankton glow bright blue when being disturbed by throwing a stone or suchlike. Fajardo lies close to a few islets (that allow kayaking) and a heterogeneous mix of seven different ecological systems including coral reefs, beaches, lagoons, mangroves and dry forest that together are home to many native and exotic animal species.

Places of Interest in Fajardo
Cape San Juan Light is a lighthouse located on the highest point of Cape San Juan in Fajardo. It was constructed in 188, was first lit on 2 May 1882 and none of its original illuminating apparatus has been changed ever since 1898. This iconic lighthouse had played a major part in ascertaining naval formations during the Spanish-American War.
Culebra
Culebra is where you should head to get a superb beachside experience revolving around coral reefs, powdery white sands, snorkeling and diving. It is located about 25 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico. Its top draw is the Flamenco Beach, a mile long bliss of sunshine and seafood that sits alongside some superb snorkeling features. It is very rarely crowded and would thus offer you a relatively large chunk of the beach that you can use all to yourself. Some famous beaches here include Brava, Resaca and Soni Beach and they all offer accommodations and dining faculties.
El Yunque National Forest (formerly known as the Caribbean National Forest)
One of the oldest reserves in the Western Hemisphere and located 4 km southeast of San Juan, El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical forest in the United States National Forest System. It is home to over 24 species of trees and plants, out of which 26 species are not found anywhere else on the planet. It is a mountainous and sub-tropical rainforest that is best traversed through a car with a little help from local guides who would show you around the old caves, waterfalls, and native flora and fauna here.
