Bacolod is the capital city in Negros Occidental province in the Philippines. It is nicknamed 'the city of smiles' for its dazzling and intriguing mix of sights, smells, tastes, cultural diversity and profound colonial history that entices a large number of tourists every year. Bacolod comes to life during October as it celebrates its iconic festival called the MassKara Festival. This Mardi Gras-esque festival leaves the city polarized with its stellar show of several people wearing colorful attires and happy masks while dancing through the city's streets. Emblematic of the city is its superb range of delectable cuisines and sweet desserts that has earned it the nickname of the Land of Sweet People.
Places of Interest in Bacolod
Built in 1876 AD and dedicated to the presumably martyred Christian saint St Sebastian, the San Sebastian Cathedral is a famous church in Bacolod City. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bacolod. It was built using coral stones collected by a parish priest Gonzaga by the local government in 1894 AD. The church’s 1th anniversary was marked by the mounting of centennial bells at the right side of the churchyard in 1976.
Negros Museum
The Negros Museum's building was the former seat of old Provincial Government. You should visit this museum to touch a part of the city’s history vis--vis its Spanish and American Colonial past, Negros Revolution and numerous artworks. This is the only museum in the city to display traditional lifestyle, societal configurations and old furnishings from ancestral houses of the Negros Occidental Province, instead of its archaeological artifacts.
The Fountain of Justice
The Fountain of Justice is the fulcrum of Bacolod's modern history, especially the part that concerns itself with Negros Revolution leading to the end of Spanish Colonial Rule. This is the very place where the Spanish forces surrendered the city to the Filipino forces in 1898 AD to pave way for a unification of Occidental Negros and Oriental Negros provinces. The plaza and its fountain area are the go-to place in the city to for political and cultural activities, and nothing beats the surreal feeling of clicking selfies at the place where the history of the city was rewritten.
