HMAS Whyalla
HMAS Whyalla is a retired World War II-era Barthurst-class corvette and the
first ship to be built in the city of Whyalla during the war. This
733-tonne vintage ship was in service until 1984 and was later purchased by
the city council for AUD 5000. It now stands as the centerpiece of Whyalla
Maritime Museum in the city.
Whyalla Maritime Museum
The Whyalla Maritime Museum displays the history of local shipping (through
models, photographs and audio-visual displays) with a guided tour of the
HMAS Whyalla and a huge model railway display. It tells a detailed account
of HMAS Whyalla’s achievements in the Second World War and several journals
and charts that reflect early maritime heritage.
Hummock Hill
Apart from offering a superb 360-degree view of the city and the coast of
Eyre Peninsula, the Hummock Hill in Whyalla is credited for first local
settlement and subsequent mining and shipping operations. It was also a
prominent observation post during the Second World War and it still has
several gun emplacements still standing from that period. The southern
slope of Hummock Hill is home to Ada Ryan Gardens, a beautiful green park
with a duck pond and some native fauna.
Mt Laura Homestead Museum
The National Trust Mount Laura Homestead Museum comprises a 9-room
homestead (built in 1922) located in the center of the city. It is home to
several artifacts related to Whyalla’s history and is known for a 100-year
old cottage and an extensive display of old engines. This museum also has a
100-year old gaol that is made entirely of wood and iron.

Sculpture Competition
The Sculpture Competition will be an integral part of Australia’s regional
