Engelbrecht Cave (also known as North Terrace Cave or Vansittarts Cave)
Discovered in 1864, the Engelbrecht Cave is an ancient cave system located
in a nearly 35-million-year-old limestone crater known as Gambier
Limestone. This cave comprises a sinkhole and two of its major passages are
located under Mount Gambier. The topsoil surrounding the cave has a
volcanic origin and dates to the last eruption of the Mount Gambier
volcano, which is speculated to have happened sometime between 2800 and
26000 years ago.
Umpherston Sinkhole
Umpherston Sinkhole in the city of Mount Gambier was a former limestone
cave made by corrosion of limestone rocks by seawater waves. Once the upper
chamber roof of this cave collapsed naturally, it gave way to several
sinkholes as we know it today. The Umpherston Sinkhole was made into a
garden in 1886 and now attracts a large number of visitors every year
because of its picture-perfect surroundings where people can spend some
quiet time with Mother Nature.
