Engelbrecht Cave (also known as North Terrace Cave or Vansittarts Cave)

Discovered in 1864, the Engelbrecht Cave is an ancient cave system located in a nearly 35-million-year-old limestone crater known as Gambier Limestone. This cave comprises a sinkhole and two of its major passages are located under Mount Gambier. The topsoil surrounding the cave has a volcanic origin and dates to the last eruption of the Mount Gambier volcano, which is speculated to have happened sometime between 2800 and 26000 years ago.
