Much unlike its literal meaning of ‘a place to slaughter’, Bulawayo is a now relaxed and elegant Zimbabwean city that offers a contrasting perspective of national history and architecture. It was settled in 1840 and has been an epicenter of some of the most significant events that have shaped the national history, including Colonization by the British in 1860s. This city is a closed bracket of a relaxed and laid back ambiance that integrates its sedate tri-pronged offerings in history, architecture and scenic beauty- and its 20th Colonial architecture is one of those signatures. Star attractions in Bulawayo include the Matobo Hills National Park (it has a stunning landscape and about 2000 year old bushman cave paintings), the Natural History Museum, the Train Museum and the National Art Gallery.
