Tom Price is a mining town in Western Australia. It is also the highest located town with respect to sea level in the region and also serves as a launching pad for Karjini National Park. Karijini National Park
The Karijini National Park is the second largest national park in Western
Australia and it is located 70 kilometers away from the town of Tom Price.
This park is known for its many gorges, slot canyons, walking trails and
waterfalls. An impossible to miss attraction here are the numerous holes
that are filled fresh and cold water where visitors can swim and feel
refreshed.
Wittenoom
Wittenoom was a former booming asbestos mining town and is now a ghost town
located at a 90 minutes ride from Tom Price in Western Australia.
Originally a pastoral site, it went on to become the biggest town in
Pilbara region during 1940s and 1950s because it was the only source of
blue asbestos in the country then. Subsequently as health concerns with
mining increased, they led to a significant drop in mining business and
ultimately the town was put to sleep.
Mount Nameless or Jarndunmunha
Standing at 1128 meters, Mount Nameless is the highest motorable mountain
in West Australia. It is located about 4 kilometers away from the town of
Tom Price and offers a steep gravel path that can be used both as a walking
trail and four-wheel drive path to its summit. Atop this mountain, one is
awarded with a stunning 360-degree degree view of the town, Karjini
National Park and an iron mine below.
Festivals and Events
The Nameless Jarndunmunha Festival
The Nameless Jarndunmunha Festival is a regional showcase of regional arts,
crafts, traditions, music and dances. It is annually celebrated in the
month of August in Tom Price and is seconded with several other events
including a street parade, historic Nameless Ball, talent quest and live
music. Two impossible to miss attractions in this gala event are the races
called Gears and Grills (for motorists) and the King of the Mountain (a
foot race all the way to the top of Mount Nameless).
Outback Fusion Festival
The three (or four) day long Outback Fusion Festival is celebrated annually
in September in Newman, a town located a little over 200 kilometers from
Tom Price. This festival is celebrated to showcase the vibrant
multiculturalism and the engagement of residents with indigenous
communities of the region. This festival is marked with a live music
program, street theatre, an international food market, and the world’s
largest multi-octave fire organ (called Pyrophone Juggernaut) that throws
shooting flames in the air.
