Capricorn Caves

First discovered in 1881, the Capricorn Caves are one of the largest privately-owned cave systems in Australia and are located about 14 miles away from Rockhampton. These caves are made of limestone that was in turn made from local corals of shallow waters around volcanic islands. Visitors can enjoy abseiling and rock climbing here along with pursuing an adventure trip of climbing a wall and rope obstacle.

Botanic Gardens and Rockhampton Zoo

Botanic Gardens in Rockhampton are home to a Japanese Garden and the Rockhampton War Memorial. Star highlight of the garden are the Giant Banyan Figs that have large aerial roots. Beneath this tree is a tea garden. The Rockhampton Zoo, located close to the Botanic Garden, is home to a wide range of native wildlife and is known for its freshwater crocodile display.

Rockhampton Heritage Village

Rockhampton Heritage Village is a box bracket of nearly 20 reconstructed, historical buildings built during a 100-year period from 1850 and 1950. These buildings also comprise a period school, hospital and church. Some of the workshops here have period machinery and going through them gives a clear idea of how mechanical engineering was taking baby steps in those times.

Mount Archer National Park

Mount Archer National Park provides a dramatic backdrop to Rockhampton and marks the boundary of the region of Tropical Queensland. This national park is essentially eucalypt woodland with a generous presence of vine scrub. Visitors to this park will also find some native birdlife consisting of rufous shrikethrush, white-browed scrubwren, powerful owl and glossy black cockatoo. One can also take the road to Mount Archer for bushwalking and rock climbing.
