The former national capital of Oman from 1932 to 1970, Salalah is now the capital and seat of the governor of the southern Omani province of Dhofar. Two other peculiarities are also associated with this city- first that it is the birthplace of the current Sultan of the country (Qaboos bin Said) and second that it is one of probably only two places in the Arabian peninsula (besides Yemen) that experiences a monsoon season. It hosts Salalah Tourism Festival during the monsoon season between July and September, thus making it the best time to visit the city and to admire its traditional frankincense trade and Islamic architecture amidst some stellar show of dance and music.
