If you don\u2019t follow all of the necessary steps to complete a passport name change, your travel plans can become a bit of a headache. It can be an intricate process to change your name on your passport, and even a messy one if you show up to the airport with a passport in a name that doesn\u2019t match the name on your ticket.<\/p>\n

To avoid any tearful exchanges or missed flights, here\u2019s everything you need to know about getting a passport in your new name.<\/p>\n

Know Your Situation<\/h2>\n

The U.S. Department of State requires you follow different measures for changing the name on your passport<\/a> based on your situation. You\u2019ll be categorized into three areas, each with its own requirements and steps. Here are the categories:<\/p>\n

  1. Your passport is less than a year old.<\/strong> If you want to change your name on a passport that was issued less than a year ago, you\u2019ll need to submit Form DS-5504 by mail, your current passport, the document proving your name change and a passport photo.<\/li>\n
  2. Your passport was renewed over a year ago.<\/strong> You\u2019ll fill out Form DS-82 instead for eligible applicants by mail and a Form DS-11 for in-person application.<\/li>\n
  3. You can\u2019t document your name change.<\/strong> This is for specific circumstances, such as you need your passport before you’ve received any legal documents needed for your renewal (marriage certificate, court order, etc). If this is you, you\u2019ll have to fill out a Form DS-11 and apply in person. You\u2019ll also likely need a Form DS-60 Affidavit Regarding a Change of Name.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Check the Fees<\/h2>\n

    Pro-tip:\u00a0<\/strong>If you’re on a time crunch and can’t wait the usual 6-8 weeks for your updated or new passport we recommend biting the bullet and paying the $60 fee to expedite the process–a small fee to pay to half your wait time to about three weeks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Completing a passport name change doesn’t always mean paying a hefty fee. If your passport is less than a year old (new or renewed), you can get a new passport with your new name on it, free of charge. To do so, you’ll need to fill out a\u00a0passport application (Form DS-5504). Once complete, mail it in to address listed on the form and be sure to include the following important documentation<\/p>\n

    – Your current U.S. passport<\/p>\n

    – Proof of your name-change (ie: a\u00a0 certified copy of your marriage certificate, or a court order referencing the change.)<\/p>\n

    – A new passport photo<\/p>\n

    However, if it has been over a year since your passport was issued, you\u2019ll have to pay either a Renewal or First-Time Applicant Fee which ranges between $110 – $175. Unfortunately, it’s not just an easy scan and print job, and photocopying your marriage license, divorce decree or court order won’t suffice as proof of a name change. You also can\u2019t just produce a notarized copy of the document when you are applying for a name change on your passport. The U.S. Department of State requires these\u00a0proof-of-name-change documents are either\u00a0the originals <\/strong>or certified copies<\/strong>. If you are worried about getting the original document back in mail-in applications, it\u2019s best to produce a certified copy instead.<\/p>\n

    Take Processing Time Into Account<\/h2>\n

    Before you start making those international travel plans, you\u2019ll want to be sure you\u2019ll have your passport back in time. Be sure you give yourself plenty of time to actually have your new passport in your hand before you pack your bags for the airport.\u00a0The busier the time of the year, the slower the turnaround, processing time might be for passport renewals. Here’s a breakdown of the timelines you can expect, based on your method of completing the renewal:<\/p>\n

    – 6-8 Weeks:<\/strong> if you’re mailing in your old passport, without paying any expedited shipping or processing fees (as mentioned above)<\/p>\n

    – 2-3 Weeks:<\/strong> if you paid the $60 expedite the process<\/p>\n

    – 8 Business Days<\/strong>: if you go into an agency or passport center to submit your paperwork<\/p>\n

    Make Sure Your Passport Name Matches the Name on Your Ticket<\/h2>\n

Even if you are planning on changing your name after your wedding, you don\u2019t need to book your honeymoon ticket in your new name until you have actually changed your name.
