Well, with the Real ID<\/span>\u00a0Act<\/span>\u00a0deadline looming above us, the\u00a0<\/span>roughly\u00a0<\/span>twenty-seven million outstanding Americans that still need to get their Real-ID-compliant driver\u2019s licenses for domestic travel<\/span>\u00a0are gearing up to get their acts together<\/span>\u00a0(pun intended)<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019ve seen the big blue signs about new identification requirements coming up in 2020 while recently standing in an airport security line, or you have no idea that your driver\u2019s license or other state-issued ID could soon become obsolete for\u00a0<\/span>domestic\u00a0<\/span>air travel, you probably have a ton of questions. So, read on to get the full low-down on everything you need to know about the changing domestic travel rules and the upcoming deadlines for the Real ID Act.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s the Real ID Act Again?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the past, if you wanted to fly domestically,\u00a0<\/span>a valid<\/span>\u00a0driver\u2019s license or state-issued ID was all you needed\u00a0<\/span>to get through security<\/span>. Unfortunately, that\u2019s not the case anymore.\u00a0<\/span>Back i<\/span>n 2005,\u00a0<\/span>in response to the 9\/11 Commission\u2019s recommendation<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Congress passed the Real ID Act<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This\u00a0<\/span>new law<\/span>\u00a0institutes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>additional<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>security standards for\u00a0<\/span>identification<\/span>\u00a0used\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>any\u00a0<\/span>U<\/span>.S.<\/span>\u00a0resident traveling by air<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>inhibits all\u00a0<\/span>federal agencies from accepting any ID that doesn\u2019t meet<\/span>\u00a0the required<\/span>\u00a0specifications<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>he idea\u00a0<\/span>being that it<\/span>\u00a0would\u00a0<\/span>amplify<\/span>\u00a0national safety<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and help\u00a0<\/span>make\u00a0<\/span>identity theft<\/span>\u00a0more difficult<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re wondering what all the recent commotion regarding Real ID is about, it\u2019s because several states were slow to comply due to privacy concerns, inconvenience and costs, so implementation only kicked into high gear on January 22, 2018. Now, with Phase 4 of the Real ID Act in full effect, residents from states that are\u00a0<\/span>not yet compliant<\/span><\/b>\u00a0are required to carry a valid passport or other TSA-approved ID to board a domestic flight. On the flipside, if your state\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span><\/b>\u00a0compliant but you just haven\u2019t got your Real ID yet, you\u2019re in the clear and can travel with the driver\u2019s license or ID\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>you have.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

REMINDER: A Real ID is only good for domestic travel, so don\u2019t for<\/span><\/i>get<\/span><\/i>\u00a0your passport for your international flights<\/a>!\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Do I Know if My\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Driver\u2019s License<\/span><\/b>\u00a0I<\/span><\/b>s<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Compliant?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Remember Peter Pan’s directions to Neverland “second star to the right…”? The very same directions will help you find out whether your ID is compliant or not.\u00a0If you see a gold or black star on the front of your license, your ID is compliant and you\u2019re good to go. But in case your head isn\u2019t spinning already, here\u2019s some more confusion: a few states (Hawaii, Ohio, Utah and Tennessee) issued compliant IDs without this star. So, your best bet to confirm whether your ID is fit for domestic travel and the new laws surrounding it is to contact your state legislation office and find out if it\u2019s compliant.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other things to look for: m<\/span>uch like a passport, the new security requirements include features such as holograms and a scannable barcode to pull up travelers\u2019 information (full name, birth date, Social Security number,\u00a0<\/span>etc.<\/span>) to add to domestic driver\u2019s licenses and other state IDs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
