Fear not, our fellow tech geeks \u2014 the future is here &#8230; or at least part of it. China recently unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/topic\/Transit-Elevated-Bus\/145353905495700?source=wtfrt&amp;position=5&amp;trqid=6314602438889072817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a unique bus<\/a> that\u2019s elevated to let vehicles pass under it, and that made us wonder about what other unique public transport is out there?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s our rundown \u2014 both super new and charmingly old \u2014 on public transport experiences that are truly one of a kind, and how you can ride them. All aboard!<\/p>\n<h2>Olli<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K564rXrlZbc\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While still very much being road-tested, Olli is a 3D printed, self-driving, electric-powered 12-seater minibus that can be seen or ridden on public roads in the small neighborhood of National Harbor in Maryland. Olli is also interactive, able to understand voice commands thanks to the IBM Watson interactive interface, so you can tell it where you need to go, ask what the weather\u2019s like, and get recommendations on the best caf\u00e9s nearby. Their gas-guzzling nature gradually put them out of favor for more cost-effective options like wave-piercing catamarans. But if you want to have a unique transit experience and float over the water like a boss, then the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hovertravel.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hovertravel<\/a> ferry between Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight (the longest running commercial hovercraft ferry) will let you feel a bit retro as you get your hover on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I ride it? <\/strong>Grab it between the two transit points of the ferry for a single fare of about \u20a416. 50 (about $22)<\/p>\n<h2>Ice Angel<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EKZFRWYsXBw\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you ever find yourself stranded on Madeline Island (the only one of Wisconsin\u2019s Apostle Islands that is inhabited) in the transitional, slushy ice phase of winter, getting to the closest town of Bayfield on the mainland might be impossible. In between the time when Lake Superior is still liquid and before it freezes into a solid ice highway, locals depend on the Ice Angel windsled &#8211; a fan-powered, 22-passenger vehicle that can glide across the ice and can float on water too &#8211; to get them across the 2.5-mile divide. \u00a0You\u2019ll be across in about 4 minutes, while a regular ferry would take 25.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I ride it? <\/strong>While we\u2019re sure the Ice Angel is mainly for students who need to commute between the two locations, for emergency travel, and transporting essentials, try showing up and mingling with the locals and you\u2019re sure to get a free ride across.<\/p>\n<h2>Underground Funicular in The T\u00fcnel<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FUednMvw21A\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A funicular railway is one that\u2019s operated by cable, with trains going up and down an incline being counterbalanced with each other. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheapoair.com\/flights\/cheap-flights-to-istanbul-ist-turkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Istanbul<\/a>, Turkey, you can use The T\u00fcnel \u2014 one of the oldest subways (after London\u2019s underground) in the world \u2014 and ride up or down the short distance between the northern shore of the Golden Horn and the beginning of the famous pedestrian mall that is \u0130stiklal Caddesi in Beyo\u011flu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I ride it:<\/strong> Prices may change, but a single trip should cost about 5 Turkish Liras (about $2)<\/p>\n<p>Have you used any unique, or even bizarre, \u00a0public transportation anywhere in the world?
