When we’re traveling, many of us consider trying the local food at our destination as important as seeing the local sites! Foods open us up to new cultures and ideas. But be warned, not all dishes consumed near and far are ones you might ever expect on the dinner table. From the cool to the crazy to the downright disgusting, consider trying these foods from the around the world next time you’re globetrotting!<\/p>\n

1.) Nashville\u2019s Hot Chicken<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This Nashville<\/a> dish sends taste buds into a tizzy. Born out of spice\u2014or spite, rather\u2014a woman wanted to get back at her boyfriend for his roaming eyes and made a super hot chicken dish in the hopes of teaching him a lesson. He ended up loving it, and thus hot chicken was born. The dish is composed of fried chicken, breaded and coated with spices. While many establishments boast their own secret spice concoctions, generally hot chicken is heavy on the cayenne. The birthplace is said to be Prince\u2019s Hot Chicken Shack<\/a>, where rookies are encouraged to\u00a0avoid the hot.<\/p>\n

Understatement of the year: there’s nothing quite like eating live larvae! The aboriginal delicacy of Witchetty Grub hails from Outback Australia<\/a>. Eaten for its vitamins and nutrients, the small white larvae come\u00a0from the ghost moth. They are dug out of the trunks of gum trees and then generally eaten live and raw. Yum!<\/p>\n

3.) Asia\u2019s Popsicle Works of Art<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Those popsicles in the frozen food section of your local grocery store have nothing on the handcrafted ice pops springing up in Asia. Places like I See I See Handcrafted Icy Desserts<\/a> out of Hong Kong<\/a> are taking popsicles to a whole new level. Rather than your standard artificial flavoring, these popsicles boast fresh and seasonal ingredients and are easy on the eyes. Some of the common flavors include Earl Grey tea with pistachio and raspberry cheesecake. I See I See is also opening up a Singapore branch.<\/p>\n

4.) Haggis<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The national dish of Scotland<\/a>, haggis, is composed of sheep\u2019s heart, lungs and liver. Oatmeal, onions and spices are tossed into the mix too. The entire concoction is then cooked in a sheep\u2019s stomach for several hours. Some swear by it and others swear upon hearing about it. Regardless, many Scots can\u2019t get enough of it. 5.) Durian Fruit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The spiky looking Asian fruit seems innocent until you smell it. Perhaps best known for its odor, the fruit has been described as smelling like body odor, gym socks and rotting meat. In fact, it’s so stinky that legally you can\u2019t bring it on the subway in Singapore<\/a>. This forbidden fruit, if you can get past the smell, is embraced by some for its fleshy interior.<\/p>\n

Dining around the globe is always an adventure. From sheep stomach in Scotland to artisan popsicles in Asia, you never know what you might find across the counter or on the table.<\/p>\n
