Top of the list is my home country of Scotland.<\/p>\n

For many in the land of whisky and rain, Hogmanay<\/em><\/a>, as December 31st<\/sup> is called, is the grandest event of the year. The capital city of Edinburgh<\/a> (Auld Reekie<\/em>) comes alive with fireworks and festivals in one of the biggest New Year\u2019s party\u2019s in the world! Musical acts keep Princes Street Gardens<\/a> rocking, whilst the majority of revelers pack Princes Street<\/a> itself, to cheer on the firework display illuminating majestic Edinburgh Castle\u2019s<\/a> ramparts, and the dark, brooding sky above.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere around Scotland, folks still first-foot<\/a> <\/em>(first to cross the threshold of a house) with traditional gifts of coal and money, purportedly to bring warmth and prosperity to the recipients for the next 12 months!<\/p>\n

Of course, there\u2019s a little bit of Scots in all of us as, when the ball drops, the bells clang, and the clock ticks past midnight\u2014those words you\u2019re all singing with your arms thrust around your nearest and dearest\u2019s shoulders, were first organized and put on paper by Robert Burns<\/a>, Scotland\u2019s national poet! \u00a0Intended as a call to remember long standing friendships, Auld Lang Syne<\/a><\/em> has been adopted all over the world for New Year celebrations and many other commemorative occasions!
