Here are some legit tips to consider when packing a bag that’s not only\u00a0light, but also has all the essentials.<\/p>\n

1. Layer up, just in case.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The secret to successful travels lies mostly in temperature control. Not even kidding. There’s nothing worse than being too hot or too cold, so no matter what your destination, you should always bring along a cardigan and a\u00a0scarf. Planes can get cold. Restaurants get cold. Even on a sunny, sandy beach, rain can happen. You’ll be the most prepared\u00a0traveler in your troupe.<\/p>\n

The key to this trick is to keep climate in mind:\u00a0For tropical destinations, a light knit will do, but if you’re expecting\u00a0snow, you’ll obviously\u00a0want more bulk. For cold weather, you’ll already have some long sleeves packed away, but for the bulk layer, anything you can throw over a tee works.<\/p>\n

For best results, aim for something versatile that can be easily added or removed at the faintest hint of a breeze.\u00a0A\u00a0knit blazer can really dress up a pair of jeans if you have dinner plans, but if casual is more your speed,\u00a0bring that\u00a0puffy vest that’s usually\u00a0reserved for post-workout grocery shopping.<\/p>\n

Personally, I use a bold lipstick and bright pair of shoes to top off an ensemble with\u00a0a pop of color, but if pointy flats and makeup aren’t your thing, try\u00a0a hat, some jewelry, and\u00a0that scarf your S.O. got you for your birthday.<\/p>\n

Ties and belts are super easy to roll up and nestle into a shoe (or wherever there’s room), and they can work wonders with\u00a0a pair of jeans and that cardigan you picked out earlier.<\/p>\n

If you’ve still got that\u00a0photo from Tip#2 handy and need a boost of creativity, take another look to see what little accents\u00a0you might be able to borrow for your\u00a0wardrobe. Is there a tiny bit\u00a0of red popping out of\u00a0those blues and grays? Or maybe some purple and yellow in all of that greenery? This is your chance to try something new, so be brave and\u00a0try a pairing you maybe hadn’t considered\u00a0before.<\/p>\n

4. Don\u2019t OVER-prepare.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you’re anything like me, you tend\u00a0to squeeze in a lot of those just-in-case items. I totally get it. You pack on autopilot at first, mindlessly\u00a0throwing a few pairs of socks in with the undergarments just to get something<\/em>\u00a0packed.<\/p>\n

But wait a sec!\u00a0Consider your footwear:\u00a0how many pairs of shoes do you\u00a0really<\/em> need? If your dress code will range from casual to fancy, then yes, you’ll probably need at least two pairs, but\u00a0if you can get away with stylish comfort for duration of your trip, I highly recommend bringing just the one pair, and wearing\u00a0<\/em>them on your flight. Trust me, a little extra room for another outfit will go much farther than that bulky pair of shoes.<\/p>\n

Remember, you\u00a0probably won’t need socks if you only plan to wear sandals (it’s still a fashion faux pas, DAD), but if your shoes actually do call for it, bring enough socks\u00a0for each day of your trip, and one extra pair if\u00a0you’ll be skiing, trekking through mud, or otherwise being incredibly active.<\/p>\n

Anything you can wear on the plane frees up that much more space in your luggage, but don’t pile on so much that you’re uncomfortable.\u00a0For each item you plan to bring, don’t just ask yourself if you really need it (because the answer will always be yes); instead, ask yourself how\u00a0you’d fare\u00a0without<\/em> it.\u00a0Cut the non-essentials anywhere you can, and leave the extras behind.*<\/p>\n

*The exception here is underwear —\u00a0pack for one or two more days than your trip (because honestly, you just never know).<\/p>\n

5. Leave room to shop.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Whether or not you plan to collect\u00a0tangible items to bring back with you — maybe some trinkets for loved ones, or an over-sized tee that’ll never be more than pajamas —\u00a0make sure to allow yourself the room to indulge. There’s nothing worse than\u00a0squishing, emptying, and re-configuring all your clothes, finally get that zipper to zip, only to turn around and spot\u00a0your nephew’s new socks still sitting on the dresser.<\/p>\n

NBD, if you’re single-handedly filtering funds\u00a0back into the economy — as long as you’ve reserved the space<\/em> for it.<\/p>\n
