Sopris near where Denver was said to write his smash hit, \u201cRocky Mountain High.\u201d The hit single would later go on to become the official state song of Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, some are not so mile high on the idea. Because the peak in question is located within a wilderness protection area, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names has jurisdiction over any proposed name change. According to the board\u2019s chairman, Lou Yost, a 1964 law discourages name changes in protected areas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Still, John Denver fans are hoping an exception is made for Mr. Denver and his potential new namesake.
