Here’s what you need to know

Las Vegas. Just reading those words can send the mind wandering through all of the possibilities a trip to Vegas can inspire. There’s food. There are drinks. There are clubs. There are the mega resorts.

And, the cheap airfare to get to Vegas makes it easier than ever to turn those dreams of Vegas into a reality. But Vegas isn’t for amateurs. Heading there without some background on the city can lead to a spoiled trip.

Not sure what you need to know? Here’s a start.

1. Check with your hotel to see if they offer airport shuttle. Most times, casinos have free or low-cost options that provide far better rates than the cabs. If you’re staying on the Strip and opt for a cab, know ahead of time the best way to get from the airport to the hotel. Cabbies in Vegas are notorious for taking visitors on long hauls, so beware. Sometimes the quickest route isn’t taking the I-15, but going the back roads. If you’re not sure, call your hotel ahead of time and ask them the best way to get there from the airport.

2. Utilize your concierge. The concierge in Las Vegas are some of the most knowledgeable people in the city. From making reservations at a restaurant to booking a tour to the Grand Canyon, these folks are helpful and their goal is to ensure you have a good time.

3. Make reservations. If you decide to make your own reservations for restaurants, plan ahead. Weekends are hard to get seated unless you arrive around 5 p.m. or after 9:30 p.m. If you want a prime time dining spot, call a day in advance. And, if you have your heart set on a new restaurant, book it before you leave. That way, you know you’ll get in.

4. Don’t pay full price for a show ticket. While some shows will never offer discounted tickets, most on The Strip work with outside ticket brokers and slash ticket prices. There are outlets all over town, so head to one like Tickets 4 Tonight, and see if the show you want is on there. Plus, these outlets also have discount tickets for dining and more (and you don’t have to pay to get the offers). There’s also the All Stage Pass available for Caesars properties that gives you access to 18 shows in two days for $99.

5. Make friends with a VIP host if you’re going to a club. Social media makes it easy to find out who works at what clubs. Before you stand in line for hours trying to get into the hottest club in town, do some research and find a VIP host. While sitting down at the clubs typically means forking over the big bucks for bottle service, a host can help you skip the long lines and, often times, the hefty cover charge for out-of-state people.

6. Prostitution is illegal. Contrary to popular belief, prostitution is not legal in Clark County. If you’re in town to enjoy the brothels, you will be sad to learn there are none. However, a quick drive down the road to Nye County offers plenty of legal entities. Many hotels offer services to these places.

7. Gambling = free drinks. Yes, free drinks. So long as you are sitting at a slot machine or table and spending money, you and your crew can drink for free. While the mixed drinks may be a little light on the alcohol, they’re still free. Just be sure to tip the server.

8. Lighting up is a thing of the past. Gone are the days where a smoker can light a cigarette in the middle of a lobby. Or a shopping mall. Today, smoking has been relegated pretty much to the casino floor and night clubs. There’s no smoking in places that serve food.

9. Don’t overeat. There are plenty of opportunities thanks to the buffets, and buffet passes that give people all-day access, to fill up to the point of being sick. Don’t do it. Las Vegas is a mecca for good food. One buffet is likely enough overeating for the day. Save the calories and the space and go try some restaurants that you can’t find at home.

10. That infamous adage … it’s not true. Thanks to social media and the like, what happens here doesn’t stay here. So, get crazy, but not too crazy.

Planning your first visit to Sin City?
