{"id":94608120,"date":"2012-12-05T10:35:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T10:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cheapoair.com\/miles-away\/family-travel-new-york-city-for-the-holidays\/"},"modified":"2018-09-18T09:48:03","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T09:48:03","slug":"family-travel-new-york-city-for-the-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cheapoair.com\/miles-away\/family-travel-new-york-city-for-the-holidays\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Travel: New York City for the Holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Family Travel: New York City for the Holidays, Flickr: petercruise\" src=\"\/miles-away\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/2012\/12\/NewYorkCityfortheHolidays.jpg\" alt=\"Family Travel: New York City for the Holidays, Flickr: petercruise\" width=\"450\" height=\"340\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/div>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Rockefeller Center!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Try as they may, I am not sure any US city can beat NYC for its festive holiday spirit.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheapoair.com\/deals\/family-travel\">Families looking to book a vacation<\/a><\/strong> during the \u201cmost wonderful time of the year\u201d are in for an incredible treat.\u00a0 Although there are plenty of hands-on activities, the real magic of Christmas in New York City is not in a particular activity, it is in that undefined sense of holiday magic that seems to fall on the city like a blanket of fresh, white, and surprisingly cozy snow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The epicenter for Christmas in New York is Rockefeller Center.\u00a0 You simply can\u2019t say you\u2019ve Christmased in NYC without a visit here.\u00a0 30 Rock\u2019s famous Christmas tree, which lit this past week for the 2012 season, is a Norway Spruce standing at 80 feet tall, strung with more than 30,000 lights!\u00a0 If you are so inclined, and don\u2019t mind the wait, ice skate with the family on what is arguably America\u2019s most famous outdoor rink.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t want to wait, simply sit back and take it all in: enjoy the shops and eateries and marvel at the festive holiday d\u00e9cor and thousands upon thousands of twinkle lights.\u00a0\u00a0 If your kids are properly bundled and up for it, take the chilly walk down Fifth Avenue to check out the department store windows.\u00a0 At Macy\u2019s, visit Santa in his elaborate Santaland or watch a Christmas show at the Puppet Theater on the eighth floor.\u00a0 You also must make a trip to toy heaven: FAO Shwartz, although you should arrive early to avoid the crowds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are plenty of other places to ice skate in the city if you are fine with breaking tradition.\u00a0 Locals will tell you to head to Citi Pond, where you can skate for free.\u00a0 Central Park features two rinks, as well as the chance to take a carriage ride through a winter wonderland, a special treat for kids of any age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since New York is known for its theater scene, be sure to explore some of the city\u2019s favorites.\u00a0 Celebrating its 85th season, the classic Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes is pretty much a must on everyone\u2019s list.\u00a0 Where else can you see a lineup of synchronized dancing Santas?\u00a0 I admit that I wanted to audition for this as a small child \u2013I still get excited just thinking about it.\u00a0 If your kids are less dance-inclined, head to see \u201cElf, the Broadway Musical\u201d running through January 6th.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><br \/>\nDon&#8217;t forget to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cheapoair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Like us&#8217;<\/a><\/strong> on Facebook for exclusive travel deals!
