Disney<\/strong> will once again try its hand at a Broadway hit next spring when it brings \u201cNewsies\u201d to the Nederlander Theater. Based on the 1992 Disney film about striking New York City<\/strong> newsboys in 1899, the production will feature a much smaller budget than Disney\u2019s previous forays into Broadway.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cNewsies\u201d will cost about $5 million and is scheduled to run only from March 15 to June 10, 2012, according to the New York Times<\/a>. Disney\u2019s other recent productions, \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d and \u201cTarzan,\u201d cost about three times that and were seen as critical and commercial failures.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Disney\u2019s last Broadway hit came with \u201cMarry Poppins\u201d which opened five years ago and continues to run at a profit. \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d which opened 14 years ago, is still a must-see for visitors arriving on flights to New York City<\/a><\/strong> and has been Disney\u2019s biggest Broadway hit to date.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
