{"id":3708,"date":"2013-01-03T10:22:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-03T10:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cheapoair.com\/miles-away\/family-travel-the-grand-canyon-of-the-pacific-in-hawaii\/"},"modified":"2018-09-17T15:25:36","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T15:25:36","slug":"family-travel-the-grand-canyon-of-the-pacific-in-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cheapoair.com\/miles-away\/family-travel-the-grand-canyon-of-the-pacific-in-hawaii\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Travel: The Grand Canyon of the Pacific in Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Family Travel: The Grand Canyon of the Pacific in Hawaii, Flickr: elchode\" src=\"\/miles-away\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/2013\/1\/TheGrandCanyonofthePacificinHawaii.jpg\" alt=\"Family Travel: The Grand Canyon of the Pacific in Hawaii, Flickr: elchode\" width=\"450\" height=\"340\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/div>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u00a0Waimea Canyon!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While traveling to Hawaii, it is sometimes difficult to pry your feet out of the sand to do some non-ocean related exploration.\u00a0 When you\u2019ve finished your book and the kids just start to get tired of snorkeling, hop in the car and head to Kauai\u2019s west side for a day of diversity while exploring Waimea Canyon, the \u201cGrand Canyon of the Pacific.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Having been to the actual Grand Canyon in Arizona, I had my reservations.\u00a0 We loved it.\u00a0 No doubt your family will too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nUnlike anything else in all of the Hawaiian Islands\u2019 landscape, this chasm is 14 miles long, one mile wide, 3,600 feet deep, and lined with magnificent and diverse colors.\u00a0 The main road, Highway 550, serves as your entry point up to the canyon, which can be explored beautifully from the luxury of your own rental car.\u00a0 Numerous lookout points (almost all boasting kid-friendly restrooms) show you various views of the canyon\u2019s wondrous valleys, buttes, and vistas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nTwo main lookouts feature the best views: the lower lookout and Waimea Canyon Overlook.\u00a0 Locals will tell you to arrive early if you don\u2019t want the cloud cover to block part (or all) of your view.\u00a0 We visited on a very cloudy afternoon, but were fortunate enough to get a break in the clouds when we arrived at the top.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIf you continue further up the road, you\u2019ll arrive at Kokee State Park which boasts a surplus of kid-friendly hiking opportunities.\u00a0 If you are hoping to hike within Waimea, there are only two official park options.\u00a0 Iliau Nature Loop is an extremely short and easy walk for families with children of all ages.\u00a0 The trail is .3 miles long and loops right back to your vehicle for easy in and out access.\u00a0 The Kukui Trail is not one for the youngest set.\u00a0 Although the entire trail is only 2.5 miles long, it drops over 2,200 feet in elevation as you descend down into the canyon floor.\u00a0 Camping is available by permit at the Wiliwili Camp site, although there is no running water or facilities.\u00a0 Be sure to plan ahead as flash flooding can occur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hike into savings with a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheapoair.com\/deals\/family-travel\">Hawaii family vacation<\/a><\/strong> from CheapOair!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<em>Don&#8217;t forget to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/cheapoair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">follow us on Twitter<\/a><\/strong> for exclusive travel deals!
