The major chains tend to be extremely expensive in London, and some neighborhoods can get pricey, as well. I\u2019ve always had good luck at the Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes London, on Baker Street (of course!). The rooms tend to be inexpensive, and the hotel is convenient to the subway and most of the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eat well, pay less:<\/strong> There is no shortage of upscale restaurants in London, and it\u2019s easy to spend a fortune. If you want to eat something interesting \u2013 and a lot of it \u2013 without breaking the bank, head over to the Clerkenwell neighborhood and settle in at Giant Robot. I showed up ready to eat one of the restaurant\u2019s many burgers until I found my true culinary love \u2026 meatballs! Go with veal meatballs in porcini cream, parmesan and tarragon sauce (that\u2019s what I did). The meatballs are served on mashed potatoes, an experience new to me and one I\u2019m likely to repeat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walk the City:<\/strong> All of London is a living, breathing museum. Head down to the City of London and stroll around for a while. You\u2019ll get a perspective on the town that isn\u2019t available out in Mayfair or the other surrounding neighborhoods. Step into one of the pubs frequented by the after-work crowd to hang with the locals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shop local:<\/strong> While you\u2019re in the City, cross the Thames and head over to Borough Market. It\u2019s a great place for an excellent grilled cheese sandwich, not to mention the chance to peruse a large and lively farmer\u2019s market.
