The answer depends on several variables
that are particular to you (e.g., where you are traveling, what type of
car you will be renting, and insurance you may already have). We can, however,
offer you the following suggestions:
Auto insurance rules and policy coverage
vary widely, especially when traveling abroad. Read the Important Rental
Information on the payment page for rental cars on our website to find out the
rules that apply to the specific car that you will be renting.
Car Rental in the U.S.
If you are a U.S. citizen renting a car
domestically, check your personal and/or credit card auto insurance, if any, as
they may or may not cover your rental car and your use of it
completely. Be aware that personal policies are usually designed for
the car you own, not the car you rent. Credit card auto rental insurance
is usually secondary, and may not cover certain types of vehicles. Examine
these types of policies very carefully, if you have them, before considering
whether or not to rely on them to cover your rental car.
Car Rental Abroad
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling abroad,
your personal auto insurance policy will not cover you, and credit card
insurance will usually not be honored. Rental Locations May Require Specific
Coverage. Your selected rental location's terms may include mandatory, local
insurance requirements that can result in additional charges for insurance
coverage at the time of rental, even if you already have valid coverage.
Some rental car company locations may not accept third-party coverage, so
purchasing the rental car company's insurance may be required. Others may
bundle insurance into their basic rental car rate. This varies by location, and
you are responsible for ensuring that you have adequate, acceptable rental car
insurance with minimal duplication of coverage.
We pride ourselves on offering auto
insurance in only those countries and regions where we know it will be valid.
If you file a claim, it should certainly be honored. But just because the
policy we sell will be honored for a claim, does not guarantee that a
particular rental car company location will rent you a vehicle without having
to buy additional insurance from them. To best inform you of what to expect
when you arrive at the rental car counter, we share the terms and conditions
for each rental location so that you can review them in advance. These are
under Car Policy or Important Rental Information on the payment page for rental
cars on our website.
Prepare in Advance of Departure
We strongly urge you to research and be familiar
with all of your insurance options and the rental car location's policies
before you arrive at your destination. Some locations may have
aggressive insurance sales staff who can take advantage of travelers who can
be confused when trying to understand all of the options at the last minute,
after a long flight. We may be able to assist you with understanding the rental
location's terms before you go. For assistance, contact Customer Care at 800-566-2345 or 212-478-0335.
We cannot stress enough that you should
read the Important Rental Information on the payment page for rental cars on our
website. It provides insurance information, such as rates and requirements, for
the specific location from which you will be renting that can help you
with your decision. Read it before adding insurance or completing a car rental
