Tips on Health for Senior Travelers Published On: August 11, 2009
  1. Check-up : Before you embark on a trip, get a check-up from your family doctor to ensure that you are fit for travel. Let your doctor know where you plan to travel to and for how long.

    • Your physician’s approval that you are fit for the type of travel you wish to take will give you peace of mind. In the event you need some medication or advice, your physician will be able to provide you with what you need.
    • Also get a list of prescriptions you’re already taking and prescriptions for refills prior to your departure.
    • Bring your doctor’s number with you in case of an emergency.
    • If you take multiple pills during the day and at specific times, be sure to purchase a travel pill box with your pills divided by day.

  2. Getting Vaccinated : If you’re traveling abroad, and if it’s required, you might need to get vaccinated. Check with your doctor and find out what, if vaccination requirements you need before travelling. Senior travelers, if your doctor believes you should be vaccinated for diseases such as Typhoid, Hepatitis A, B or C as a safety measure, please consider it.

  3. Carry your prescription and medication : A prescription of all current medications you’re taking should be brought with you in case you lose any medication while traveling.

    • Pack medications in your carry-on, should your luggage be delayed, lost or stolen.
    • Be certain you bring enough medication for your entire trip.
    • We urge you to pack an extra week's supply in case of delays.
    • However, we would not advise you to overstock your medication due to customs restriction.

  4. Labeling and storage of medications : Special care needs to be taken while labeling or storing your medication.

    • All medication should be kept in an airtight container and your supply should not exceed a month, due to customs restriction.
    • All medicine should be labeled generically for international recognition. Most brands differ from country to country. Since generic is an international language, so to speak, the local pharmacist would be able to identify your medication should you need a refill from your doctor.
    • Do not keep medications in your pocket, regardless of temperature; you want to make sure your medication is stored properly.

  5. Staying fit in-flight : Flights, especially long haul flights, can take a toll on anyone’s health. Here are some precautionary tips that you can take to stay healthy in-flight.

    • To avoid dehydration in pressurized cabins, something senior travelers might be more prone to, stay away from alcohol during your flight.
    • The best defense against dehydration is to drink plenty of fluids before, after and during a flight. Water is ideal.
    • To prevent fatigue and joint stiffness, periodically walk up and down the aisle and try to do some stretching or exercises. A wiggle break is recommended every 30 minutes unless you are sleeping.

  6. Allergies : If you have allergies, that doesn’t mean you can’t vacation or explore.

    • If you are allergic to certain medications, foods or insect bites, consider wearing a "Medical Alert" bracelet.
    • You should also carry a letter from your physician explaining treatment s you should receive in the event you do have an allergic reaction to something. Similarly, if you have a severe allergy that requires an Epipen, make sure you bring it with you.

  7. Dining out : During your vacation, be extra cautious of the food and water.

    • When eating out, ask questions about the food ingredients and water. Only drink bottled water during travel to avoid any complications.
    • Ensure fruits and vegetables are properly washed before consuming.
    • Carefully select restaurants, and avoid buying food from street vendors whose food storage and cooking methods may appear unsafe.

  8. Clothing : Dressing comfortably for flights and travel is important.

    • Wearing loose clothing not only makes air travel more comfortable, but also allows blood to circulate more easily during periods of inactivity.
    • Check with your doctor about compression stockings, which can stimulate lower leg circulation and may be helpful for some seniors. Avoid tight socks or stockings.

  9. Avoid overexertion : Prevention is the best medicine and travelling is no exception.

    • Avoiding fatigue while traveling is as important as it is in your daily life. Nobody knows your body like you. If you’re feeling tired, relax and unwind, so you feel rejuvenated to enjoy your trip at a leisurely pace.
    • While travelling, make sure that you get enough sleep, too. Taking care of your body is essential to staying healthy.

  10. Travel Insurance : Having travel insurance is a must, irrespective of the length of your journey, be it a week, two-weeks or month, even a quick weekend.
    • Travel insurance is necessary, as it will cover you in the event of unforeseen illnesses and accidents.
    • Make sure that your travel insurance is valid and in effect for the entire duration of your trip, especially to avoid unexpected medical costs.
Travelling can be stressful, even for the most experienced travelers. However, health risks shouldn’t prevent you from traveling, though you should take extra precautions before embarking on a trip of a lifetime. We hope you’ll utilize our tips and explore the world and enjoy it to the fullest with as little worry as possible.
