- Creating a Budget and Sticking To It: Creating and planning a budget is definitely essential when it comes to saving money and eating while at your destination.
- The cost of food can easily get way out of control, especially if you’re traveling with a family, or a group, and for a 7-14 day vacation. Before leaving home for your vacation, it’s important to have a budget, a strategy and a plan for meals.
- Once you’ve allocated the amount you want to spend on food each day, it’s essential that you stick with that plan. If you’ve budgeted for a few extra dollars or you don’t exceed your budget, reward yourself with an extra treat.
- Book Bed and Breakfast Hotels: Most bed and breakfast hotels include meals and sometimes snacks, which is a great savings. Even though B&B’s can be a bit pricey, after preparing your budget and figuring out how much you’ll spend on breakfast each day, you might find out that Bed and Breakfasts are far more affordable.
- All B& B's include breakfast as part of the room price. You can take full advantage of this and fill up, so you might not want a snack until lunch time.
- Bringing snacks and Drinks with you: Having some snacks, like protein bars, trail mix or even fresh fruit, as well as some bottles of water or juice can help save a lot of money instead of buying them from street vendors and convenience stores.
- If you're traveling by car, stock up on bottled water and other drinks at the supermarket or discount store.
- A six-pack of sodas, juices or waters at the supermarket or discount store will often cost far less than the price of a single bottle from a convenience store or street vendor.
- A cooler filled with juice boxes, water, fresh fruit, protein bars, trail mix, string cheese and other snacks will keep you going in between meals and save you a lot of money.
- Eat Where the Locals Eat: Generally, locals know the best, most affordable, casual restaurants with a large local clientele and an affordable menu. Speak to the concierge, the bellmen, the maids and other hotel employees and ask them where their favorite dining spots are in town.
- Avoid Alcohol During Meals: Cocktails and alcohol can be one of the costliest aspects of meal planning. If you’re on a tight budget, we advise you to consider staying away from alcohol, as it can become quite pricy. Sodas, juices and water at budget restaurants are not only more affordable, but often times you can get free refills. Be sure to ask your waiter or waitress.
- Happy Hours: Happy Hours are great times for food and drinks, especially if you’re on a tight budget. The choices are endless and the prices offered are usually within a traveler’s budget. Most local bars frequently offer great discounts on drinks. They also set up hors d'oeuvre buffets, or pizza and sandwiches. Sometimes, you’ll see complimentary bowl of nuts and snacks. Do your research and check-out the local Happy Hours near the areas you’re planning on doing your sightseeing.
- Visit the Local Supermarket: Eating out daily is something we avoid while at home. If you prefer cooking your own meals, consider choosing an Extended Stay Hotel with kitchens. This way, you can hit the local grocery store and make your own meals while on vacation.
- If you're staying in a hotel room with a kitchen, you can make your own meals just the way you like them without spending too much money.
- You'll get better prices at a local grocery store than at hotel shops.
- Often, the deli at a local supermarket can provide you with sandwiches, salads, chips and beverages for half of what you'd pay if you bought the same meal at a restaurant.
- Enquire about Dining Options: After planning your vacation and after checking in at your hotel, ask the concierge and local visitor center about any special deals at local eateries during your stay. Also, check the local magazines and newspapers with regards to any festivals and coupons for local restaurants. If you can be flexible about when you dine, you can take advantage of early-bird specials or other special menus.
Eating cheap while traveling is always a challenge. Though, if you plan ahead, you don’t have to miss out on wonderful, exciting cuisine during your vacation. Keep it simple, stick to your budget meal plan and you'll enjoy fine dining as you travel.
