Travel Tips for Beach Vacation Published On: October 14, 2009
Picking a Beach Destination: There are thousands of destinations to choose from when it comes to idyllic beach getaways. Here are some pointers to keep in mind before choosing the perfect beach getaway for you.

  • Distance from your hometown and travel time, i.e., is this a day trip, a weekend getaway or a 7-14-day vacation?
  • Is the hotel you’re staying at located on the beach?
  • Amenities, availability and when you travel, i.e., off-peak or on-peak.
  • Availability of activities that would be important to you and your travel companions or your family, such as boating, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, hiking, etc.

Packing for your Beach Vacation: Before you embark on your vacation to your favorite beach destination, be sure to pack your accessories. A beach vacation, though fun, requires careful thought as to what you will need for a day at the beach.

Here is checklist of important items to consider for your beach vacation.

  • Swim suits
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Towels
  • Extra underwear
  • Clothing to change into, or a garment to wear over your bathing suit before you head home
  • Slippers
  • Beach toys for the kids
  • Books and magazines
  • Destination guides, if you are not well acquainted with the destination you’re visiting
  • Food and water, including paper plates, disposable cups and napkins
  • Bring a camera and lots of film or lots of space in your memory card
  • A snorkel, mask and fins or your diving equipment is a good idea if you want to explore the reefs, although most of this can be rented at several beach destinations.

Choosing the Destination: We strongly urge you to research the destination before choosing, rather than just relying on pictures that you might have seen in promotional brochures and online.

  • Ask your friends about the destination and colleagues who have already been there.
  • Browse the internet and check for reviews with regards to the hotel and destination. These reviews might help you figure out what to expect.

Consider the Weather: The weather is of extreme importance. The weather in many beach destinations is often too hot during the summer, but not during the fall or winter. However, depending on where you go, it might be the rainy season or hurricane season.

  • Make sure that you research and check the weather reports at the location of your chosen destination before booking your beach vacation.
  • Find out what weeks are optimal for weather that best suits your needs.

While at the Beach: Now, you’re living the dream, basking in the sun and dipping your toes in the ocean. Please keep these tips in mind to avoid any mishaps.

  • Apply sunscreen, it’s extremely important. It applies to children as well as adults. Children's skin is much more sensitive to sunlight. Sunscreen with a high SPF, higher than 30 or even 45, is recommended, especially if you are prone to sunburns.
  • There are hundreds of remedies for temporary relief from the pain of sunburn. Aloe Vera is one of the best known treatments, while other lotions and sprays may also help. Make sure that you have a remedy that you know works best for you stored in your travel kit before heading out to a beach.

Fluid Intake: Pack and drink plenty of water. Many people do not realize how much fluid the sun and salty water drains from your body. It doesn't take long to become dehydrated.

  • Have children sip on water throughout the day and make sure that you have plenty of water while on the beach, as you do not want to get dehydrated.
  • The experts suggest not substituting water with any form of alcohol. Though cocktails may be fine, nothing is a better substitute for water when it comes to avoiding dehydration.

Be Mindful of Tides and Currents: When visiting a beach, inquire about the tides and currents.

  • During high tides, twice a day, the beach may disappear or make swimming quite dangerous, especially when the beach is near rocks and reefs, although surfers prefer the stronger waves.
  • During low tides, twice a day, the sea is much calmer, better for relaxation and preferred for most beach activities.

Remember that there is something magical about lying on the beach, soaking in the sun and listening to the crashing waves. The clear water paired with the hot sun is an unbeatable combination to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Think ahead, plan and pack wisely and you are sure to enjoy time with your friends, or family on the beautiful shores of the beach.
