When touring Sofia's town centre, the dominating neo-classical Stalinist architecture will please even the most discriminating architectural enthusiast. A walk down the side streets will reveal a European city with tree-lined boulevards and balconied buildings by 19th-century Russian and Viennese architects.

Sofia's most photographed monument, Alexander Nevski, a superb neo-Byzantine cathedral-sized church, is a gorgeous must-see with it's copper tops and golden domes.

For those fascinated by the ancients, the National Archaeological Museum, features an impressive collection of Thracian, Greek and Roman artifacts. The redbrick Rotunda of St George is famed as the oldest preserved building in the city, dating back to the fourth century and originally conceived as a Roman temple, is yet another architectural point of interest.

For the souvenir minded shopper, there are great items to be found. Reproduction icons, Russian dolls, jewelry, ceramics, wooden items, embroidered tablecloths, and lace are all local items.
